The Glastonbury Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Scott A. Hurwitz as the next Superintendent of Glastonbury Public Schools.
The Board selected Dr. Hurwitz for his commitment to putting students first, extensive leadership experience, and clear vision for the future. His proven ability to advance educational excellence and deep understanding of the Glastonbury community reinforced the Board's confidence that he is the right leader for the district.
“He is a leader of rare quality with broad experience and a deep knowledge of district operations," said Julie Thompson, Chair of the Superintendent Search Committee. "He believes in the potential of every student. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Hurwitz elevates others. He knows how to draw out the best in people.”
Dr. Hurwitz begins his new position on July 1, 2026. "I care deeply about this community," he said, "and remain committed to supporting our students, staff, and families while building on Glastonbury’s tradition of excellence.”

Professional artists selected GHS senior Anna Luby as the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for Connecticut Representative John Larson’s First Congressional District. Anna’s dedication and artistic vision make this such a well-deserved honor. Her work will be on display at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. for one year. This summer, Anna will join winners from across the country in D.C. for a national exhibition.
Smith Middle School eighth-grader Eric Ren delivered an outstanding performance at this year’s state MathCounts competition, placing fourth out of 172 students and earning a spot on the Connecticut National Team. This distinction places Eric among the top math students in the state. Join us in celebrating his success.
The GHS Robotics Team claimed the CIAC State Championship hosted here at Glastonbury High School. A terrific accomplishment! Earlier in the year, they were also recognized for receiving the FIRST Engineering Inspiration Award and recently, FIRST Impact Award—the most prestigious honor in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

After a 55-year career in education, Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Bookman will retire on June 30, 2026. Dr. Bookman served Glastonbury Public Schools as high school principal for 19 years and as superintendent for 22 years. Many major initiatives launched during his tenure remain essential to the school system’s daily operations. Congratulations to Dr. Bookman on an extraordinary career!
The Board of Education recently recognized Glastonbury students and their coaches from the First Lego League Robotics Team, the Electronites. The team found an innovative solution that might help prevent electric vehicle fires. They also received a United States patent for their invention.
On March 31, 2026, the Board of Education approved the replacement of the Glastonbury High School stadium turf field and track and the construction of two new multi-purpose turf fields. Once complete, these fields will provide safe, modern facilities for GHS student-athletes and youth sports organizations across our community. Click here for our turf project website to learn more.

Glastonbury Public Schools has been recognized by the NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants) for its outstanding commitment to music education with a Best Communities for Music Education designation. The Music Department has held this distinction since 2013.
On April 6, 2026, the Board of Education approved $2.5 million in reductions to next year’s school budget, as required by the Town Council. These reductions affect staffing, operations, and student resources. They reflect a challenging budget year and are expected to create ongoing financial pressures in future budgets. Click here to register for our 2026 Summer Camp offerings. Summer Enrichment Camps are self-supporting and are designed and facilitated by staff. There is no cost to the Board of Education as camp tuition covers the costs of teacher salaries and supplies.
Any child who is five years of age on or before September 1, 2026, and who meets all residency requirements is eligible to begin kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year.

The Board of Education's current long-term facilities plan is set to expire in 2027. A new 10-year plan for school space is under development. The new plan will address short and long-term solutions to elementary school space issues and the need to modernize many of our schools through building renovations.
